Dear Students, Parents, Guardians and Caregivers

I hope you are enjoying the Labour Day Long Weekend immersed in family and friends. This week staff arrived to get ready for the new school year. It was good to see old faces and new. We also welcomed students for their photos and IDs. Volunteers for Student Leadership also met to plan and prepare for our Welcome Assemblies on Tuesday, September 2. I know the question on everyone’s mind is where is my timetable? Timetables will be launched through MyCBE at 8am on September 2. Be sure to note your Connect Classroom number as all students will attend Connect on Tuesday. Students will also attend all their subject classes following the Tuesday rotation for 20-minute classes. You will get to meet all your teachers on the first day! If you would like to try out for football, volleyball or cross-country bring your gear and be ready. Until then, enjoy your long weekend and we will see you soon.

Updates on contract talks can be found on the CBE Homepage. Here is the link: CBE Homepage (Labour Action).

School Fees

School fees can be paid online by logging into your MyCBE Account. You can also pay school fees in person at the Business Office at Pearson. Please wait until after September 5 before paying fees as there may be changes to the students’ schedule.

Attendance

When you are calling in late or absent for your student, call 403-280-6565 and press 1 for the Attendance line. Please give the following information: Spell your student’s first name and last name, give their grade, and reason for absence or late and a contact number that we have in PowerSchool.

Attendance Matters

Regular school attendance is critical for student success. Good attendance is important for a child’s ability to learn, grow and develop social skills. Attending school regularly helps children feel better about themselves and about school. Attendance in schools is compulsory in Alberta for every individual between the ages of 6 and 16. Students who attend school regularly have the opportunity to participate more fully in learning activities, which increases the likelihood of successfully completing high school.

Students who are truant or skip school will put at risk their opportunity to Walk the Stage in their Grade 12 year. Walking the Stage is earned - it is not a right. A student may have a good grade 12 year but may not have earned the opportunity to Walk the Stage because they fell behind in their Grade 10 or Grade 11 year due to lost credits or required courses resulting from persistent truancy or poor habits.

Missing 2 days of school a month or 20 days a year starting in Grade 1 is equivalent to missing a full year of schooling by grade 10!

Tips for Parents, Guardians and Caregivers

  • Communicate the importance of regular school attendance to your child
  • Schedule family events with our school calendar in mind
  • Call the school when your child is absent.
  • When possible, let the school know in advance that your child will be absent.
  • Whenever possible try to make appointments during non-school hours on non-instructional days.
  • If your child does not want to go to school, find out why and work with your school to address concerns.
  • Help your child understand Pearson’s attendance procedures
  • Remind your child that Walking the Stage in their graduating year is tied to achievement and attendance
  • Monitor your child's attendance through MyCBE

School Calendar

The school calendar is currently under construction and will be listed on our school homepage. As the year progresses, please check back regularly, as there may be changes.

Student Schedules and Course Changes

Due to increased enrollment, it may not be possible to change option courses, as most option areas are now full. Please check your timetable in MyCBE. You will also need to note that there may be changes made to your schedule due to the need to balance classes. If you have taken a summer school course, your schedule will be adjusted accordingly. It is most important to note the teacher’s name and room number for your Connect Class before you arrive for the first day of school. Student Services will post a QR code for course change requests on August 27. All requests for course changes will be done online through the QR code.

Students Leaving School During the Day

Students in grades 11 and 12, when having to leave school during the day, will come to the main office and sign out. At some point in the day or evening the parents can call the attendance line and excuse the student. The attendance line is open 24/7, so there is no need for the student to call a parent as they leave. If the student is 18 years old, they do not need parent permission. They can excuse themselves. For grade 10 students, we will ask that a parent be contacted right away before they are allowed to leave the school. This is a CBE policy, parents can call ahead or send a note signed by them, but we do prefer speaking with them on the phone. Any questions please contact Ms. Rossi-Reimer – extension is 2413.

School Council / Parent Society

Join the School Council / Parent Society and be a part of all the happenings at Pearson. Parent support is vital for student success and school culture. Our AGM will occur at 7:30pm during our Meet the Teacher Night on Tuesday, September 9.

Student Identification

Lester B Pearson is a closed Campus. This means that only students registered at Pearson are allowed in the school. All other visitors must register at the Main Office, be part of a visiting athletic team, or be here by staff invitation. All doors to the school will be locked once classes commence. During the day the only entrance students can use to enter the building will be the Main Entrance. To gain entrance you must have your current school ID on your person or on a lanyard. Grade 11 and 12 students may reuse your black lanyard. Grade 10s will be issued new lanyards. While in the building, students must carry their current ID, preferably visibly worn on a school lanyard. Grade 10s will be issued their first ID and lanyard at no charge. School IDs are required to sign out textbooks and other resources in the Learning Commons and to gain admission to athletic games and fine arts events. Lost IDs will only be replaced once at a cost of $5 for the ID and $5 for a replacement lanyard. No temporary IDs will be issued, so please be certain to have your ID with you when you leave home. If you forget, you will need to return home to get it or have someone drop it off at school. We cannot take our school safety for granted. We must all do our part to ensure overall safety and security.

Parking Passes

There will be a limited number of parking passes available for students wishing to drive and park a vehicle on school grounds. A parking pass is required, and it must be current and visibly displayed on your rearview mirror, or you will receive a parking ticket issued by the City of Calgary Parking Authority.

Parking passes are available from the business office. Please present current vehicle registration and insurance. Passes are $50 for the year or $25 per semester plus GST. Should students drive recklessly on school property, stunt or cruise around the parking lot, skip classes in their vehicles or bring individuals onto school property who are not students at Pearson, their parking pass will be revoked without refund and they will no longer be allowed to park at the school for the balance of the school year. Absolutely no loitering, being late or cutting classes in the Student Parking Lot.

Lockers

Hallway Lockers will be available for students to use again this year. The nominal fee of $10 will be charged to rent a locker for the year. This fee will be used to repair damaged lockers and replace broken locks. You may purchase a locker in the main office, Ms. Mincheva will assist students with this.

Student Pick Up and Drop-Off

Parents are requested to use 26th Avenue to drop off and pick up students. Parents may also park and wait in the designated Students Parking. There will be no waiting or parking in the Fire Lanes, in front of the Main Entrance, Handicap Bus Zones or in Staff Parking. This will ensure smoother traffic flow, reduce congestion and improve pedestrian safety before and after school.

Student Leadership

This is an all call for students who are interested in Student Leadership and the Principal’s Student Advisory. Questions can be sent to Ms. Saxton at wlsaxton@cbe.ab.ca or Mr. Chee at kechee@cbe.ab.ca

That is a wrap. Kudos if you made it to the end of this newsletter. Another year is soon to unfold. Lots to look forward to, lots to learn. Once a Patriot always a Patriot. Always know how proud I am of my students, parents, staff and school. Remember to log into myCBE and complete all the school opening forms.
