Dear Students, Parents, Guardians and Caregivers,
This weekend we will be taking time to remember the tragedy of war and those who served to end armed conflict and oppression. On Remembrance Day, I pause to remember my neighbor, Frank Pawlak. Frank fought in WW 2. He was one of 4 brothers from southern Alberta who served on the battlefields of Europe and survived. As I was growing up I would see Frank with his uniform and take the bus to the Legion every week to have a drink with friends and in memory of those who did not return. Sometimes I would see Frank at the bus stop and I would offer to drive him to the Legion. He did not talk much about his war experiences and I could sense that I should not ask. I did know that his weekly routine to the legion was deeply meaningful to him. He did this for decades. When Frank passed away he was interned in Queens Park in the Veterans Cemetery. I keep Frank’s memory and service alive every Remembrance Day as I know his sacrifice will not be in vain. The only good thing about war is its ending. We still have a long way to go. Lest We Forget.
Maatoomsii’Pookaiks | Children First - Indigenous Education Professional Learning Day
On Friday the CBE held Maatoomsii’Pookaiks | Children First - Indigenous Education Professional Learning Day. Every school in the CBE, including Pearson, took time to learn about our new Acknowledgement of the Land; what it means and our work in pursuit of truth through ReconciliAction. We ended the day with our own personal ‘Calls to Action’. This was a fruitful, reflective, and productive day.
Student Parking
Now in effect, City Bylaw will be enforcing the student parking lot. Vehicles without a current school issued parking pass will be ticketed. In addition, there have been increasing instances of poor driving and students skipping classes in their vehicles and loitering in the student parking lot during class time. This is not allowed. If you have a spare and wish to be in your vehicle during class time you must leave the parking lot. Finally vehicles with illegal blacked out windows will not be allowed to park on school property.
Alberta window tint laws overview:
- Windshield: No tint allowed.
- Front side windows: No tint allowed.
- Backside windows: Any darkness can be used.
- Rear window: Any darkness can be used only if vehicle has both left and right side rearview mirrors.
Vehicles with illegal tinting will not be allowed on school property at anytime. Reminders: Letters have been sent to Parent/Guardians/Caregivers for students whose attendance and lates have reached 30% or more. If you receive an attendance letter please speak to your child about this concern. There is a direct correlation between attendance and student success. We cannot help students do their best if they skip or if they are consistently late for class. School Messenger does send out notices if a student is late or absent. If you are getting regular calls there is a problem. If you are in need of help please reach out to the school.
Reporting Absences
When you are calling in late or absent for your student, call 403-280-6565 and press 1 for the Attendance line. Please give the following information: Spell your student’s first name and last name, give their grade, and reason for absence or lateness and a contact number that we have in PowerSchool.
